Soaking in a warm tub with the luscious scents of pure essential oils, candles lit, soothing music playing... there’s nothing like it! Contrary to what many think, this is not selfish indulgence nor a waste of time. This is taking care of yourself. This is health.

Research now shows a direct relationship between mental, emotional health and spiritual health, widely referred to as the bodymind connection. We are now beginning to understand that there is intelligence everywhere in the body, not just the brain. An intricate language exists in the various systems of the body, down to the DNA at the cellular level. This language accounts for complex actions and responses within the physical body that affect emotions, thoughts and transcendental experiences.

Quite simply, when we stimulate our sense nature while in a peaceful, relaxed state, we are communicating with the essence of ourselves which is always in a state of health and wellbeing. The more we communicate with what is inherently healthy within us, the more the entire system is invited back into its rightful place of health.

BATH & SHOWER

Engaging the senses of smell and touch at the same time is especially nice. Soaking in a warm tub of luscious oil scents is a heavenly way of nourishing the body, mind and emotions.

Add 3-6 drops of your favorite essential oil to warm bath water after the tub is filled and just before getting into the tub, as the oils aromas are quickly released from the warmth of the water. Gently stir the water to disperse oil droplets over the surface. The stirring combined with the heat of the water will evaporate the scent into the air. Light some candles, play your favorite music and soak while taking in deep breaths from time to time. Nothing could be finer!

Young Living makes a fragrance-free bath gel base to which you can apply essential oils. The gel may be placed in bathwater or used like a gentle soap. Use 15 drops of essential oil per ½ ounce of gel. Young Living also has bath gels containing essential oils which include Dragon Time for PMS and low back pain, Evening Peace for a good nights sleep, Morning Start for a refreshing beginning to your day, and Sensation, a thoroughly sensual experience.

  • Geranium or Lavender in a bath before bed can help you get a good night’s sleep
  • Use Myrtle, Peace & Calming, Sandalwood or Ylang Ylang specifically for insomnia
  • For depression, take a bath with the oils of Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, Orange or Sandalwood
  • To nourish the skin as you soak, try Chamomile, Lavender, Rosewood, Sage, Ylang Ylang or Rose Geranium
  • For aches and pains, try a few drops of Pane Away, Fir or Relieve It
  • Try Eucalyptus, Ravensara, RC or Raven for congested lungs
  • For colds or flu, Eucalyptus, RC, Raven, Frankincense, Spruce, Helichrysum, Melaleuca (Tea Tree), Myrtle, Peppermint or Rosemary
  • For PMS or menopause, soak in a warm tub of Clary Sage, Sage, Dragon Time, Bergamot, Rose Geranium, Nutmeg (with caution), Vitex, Peace and Calming or Roman Chamomile

Bath salts combined with pure essential oils create a truly luxurious experience. Epsom salts have a detoxifying action as well as being soothing to tired and sore muscles. Pure sea salt also has a detoxifying action. Soak in a tub for fifteen to twenty minutes while the salts and essential oils pull toxins from the body through the skin. Oils which detoxify are Juniper, Helichrysum, Release and JuvaFlex. Put 6-10 drops in 1 cup of a combination of Epsom Salt and Sea Salt.

A wonderful, refreshing way to use essential oils is in a shower splash, as they naturally cleanse the body. First, fill a 2 ½-3-quart ceramic or glass bowl with very warm water. Add 12-20 drops of your favorite essential oils. Step in the shower and cleanse personal areas with soap. Then scrub the entire body except the face with a loofa, brush or sea salt to remove dead skin cells and stimulate circulation. Rinse and turn off water. Gently stirring the mixture with your hand, take a cupful at a time and slowly pour the mixture over the body from the neck (do not get mixture into eyes). Do the front, back, and each side at least once, leaving a little of the mixture in the bowl. Step out of the shower and pat dry. Soak a clean washcloth with the remaining mixture and squeeze out excess. Gently clean inside each nostril and then the face and neck being careful to go gently around the eyes. Finally clean each ear inside and out (the ear reflexes to the entire body).

DREAMTIME SHOWER SPLASH

SKIN CARE

Another way to nurture yourself and your skin is to create soothing and healing lotions and moisturizing creams. A simple way to do this is to buy a fragrance-free lotion or cream (available at health food stores) and add 20 drops of essential oils per ounce of the product. If your skin is especially dry, add 20 drops of essential oil per ounce of a base oil such Young Living V-6 Vegetable Mixing Oil, a perfect blend of organic vegetable oils including sesame seed, grapeseed, sweet almond, wheat germ, sunflower and vitamin E. After stepping out of the bath or shower, apply the skin oil to wet skin and gently rub. The water combined with the oil deeply moisturizes dry skin.

  • Oily skin responds to Bergamot, Clary Sage, Cypress, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Orange and Ylang Ylang
  • For dry skin use Rosewood, Sandalwood, Patchouly (good for wrinkles), Rose Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Chamomile (inflamed skin) and Davana (chapped skin), and the blend called Gentle Baby
  • Sensitive skin loves German Chamomile, Rose Geranium, Jasmine and Lavender
  • For aging skin use Young Living Sandalwood Moisture Cream and Sandalwood Toner (I love the toner! Leaves my skin feeling moisturized even before putting on the cream!)
  • For cellulite use Grapefruit (dissolves), Cypress, Rosewood, Cedarwood, Tangerine (dissolves), Basil, Juniper, Lemon, Orange, Patchouly, Rosemary, Sage or Fennel
  • For an all-purpose body and hand lotion use either Sensation Hand and Body Lotion (with Vitamin E, moisturinzing and protecting) or Satin Body Lotion (with Vitamin C, E and A, also good for scars, burns, rashes, itching and sunburn)
  • For tanning use Young Living Sunsation Suntan Oil, which filters out UV rays without blocking the absorption of vitamin D. SPF 6.
  • If you have sunburn, cool and moisturize the skin with LavaDerm Cooling Mist. Aloe vera and lavender provide wonderful relief!

Facial masks
are a lovely way to deep clean the pores of the skin, leaving a smooth, silky finish. Follow a facial mask with a floral water tonic and you have a perfect canvas for applying your custom-made moisturizers!
Start with a good quality base clay. Look for green clay for all skin conditions, kaolin for normal to oily skin, and fuller’s earth for oily to normal skin. These clays are usually found in good health food stores. Make just enough mask for one application.

Here's a basic Facial Mask recipe:

1 tablespoon clay
1 egg yolk for dry skin, or 1 egg white or no egg for oily skin
1 teaspoon floral water/hydrolate for oily skin, or vegetable oil such as jojoba, evening primrose, wheat germ, vitamin E or borage oil for normal to dry skin
1 drop of any single oil or blend (see Skin Care for appropriate oils)

You can play with your recipe by adding and substituting other ingredients such as honey, milk, herbal infusions, glycerin, aloe juice or fresh aloe gel from the plant.

SHAMPOOS & CONDITIONERS

Make custom shampoos and conditioners for healthy hair and scalp. Purchase a fragrance-free shampoo or conditioner from your favorite health food store and add at least 20 drops of essential oil per ounce of product.

  • Rosemary is a wonderful hair and scalp tonic
  • For dandruff, use the essential oils of Lavender, Rosemary, Sage, Cedarwood, Birch or Cypress
  • For fine, delicate hair use Lavender, Clary Sage, Birch or Chamomile
  • To promote hair growth, use Basil, Cedarwood, Cypress, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Hyssop, Lavender, Lemon, Rosemary, Sage and especially Ylang Ylang
  • For extra conditioning & restoring shine and silkiness, use Young Living’s Rosewood Moisturizing Wash, Rinse and Sealer. Good for split-ends as well as hair that has been permed or color-treated.
  • Use Lavender Volume Wash, Rinse and Sealer to gently clean and add volume to fine hair.
  • Use Lemon Sage Clarifying Wash, Rinse and Sealer to remove buildup of styling products while leaving hair feeling naturally clean and healthy.

FLORAL WATERS & HYDROLATES

Hydrolates are created as essential oils are extracted through the distillation process. As steam is sent through a plant material, the steam condenses into both water and essential oil. Since water and oil do not mix, the essential oil is separated and what remains is called a hydrolate. Hydrolates contain the water-soluble essence of the plant in fluid form. They in fact retain a small amount of essential oil which is highly dispersed within the water.

Young Living offers the following exquisite hydrolates:

  • Clary Sage
  • German Chamomile
  • Idaho Tansy
  • Lavender
  • Melissa (Lemon Balm)
  • Peppermint
  • Red Cedar
  • Spearmint

Floral Water is water to which essential oils have been added. Here's a basic Floral Water recipe:

  1. In a 4 oz. glass bottle, add 1/2 teaspoon of Vodka
  2. Add 20 drops of your favorite essential oil & shake vigorously
  3. Let rest for 30 minutes or more
  4. Add distilled or purified water leaving a little space a the top. Shake vigorously.
  5. Allow mixture to sit in cool, dark location for at least one week.

Voila! You now have a natural, fresh floral water! Shake before dispensing. Floral waters have a limited shelf life, so only make as much as you will use in a week or two. To extend shelf life for several weeks, keep toilet water in the refigerator.

Floral waters and hydrolates are wonderful used on the skin as a toner. Rose, Lavender and Neroli (orange blossom) are typically used as toners for enhancing the complexion. Simply moisten a cotton ball and gently wipe the skin, while only patting around the delicate eye area.

Floral waters and hydrolates may also be added to bath water to impart a delicate floral scent or splashed on after a shower. Or they may be used as the fluid in the recipe for facial masks. Another lovely way to utilize floral waters is to mist them onto the skin for instant hydration. Spraying a floral mist and then applying your favorite cream or oil will help the skin absorb the cream or oil more deeply. No matter how you use floral waters and hydrolates, you will experience a lovely light scent and the signature essence of the original plant.

SCENT
ED CANDLES
